Functional Individualized Orthodontics

The Cranio-Mandibular system is mainly a communication and emotional organ, especially

for stress-release. Brain activity is influenced by mandible position. Bruxism is nowadays

understood as normal and a necessary function, although it produces more load in the

system than mastication. How can we integrate this function in our treatment objectives?

What changes should be considered to design occlusion to cope with it? Occlusal plane

inclination and Posterior Vertical Dimension, play a major role in Cranio-Facial growth and

development.

In this presentation, we will show how Nature develops a fully functional system and which

of those principles we can use to achieve the same in our patients. Controlling the occlusal

plane and vertical dimension opens new possibilities to treat skeletal malocclusions

successfully, taking care of the load in the Temporo-Mandibular Joints at the same time.

The difference between the left and right occlusal planes is connected with Mandibular

Lateral Displacement (MLD), which is strongly related with TMD.

Occlusion must be evaluated and treated under the patient’s individual dynamics, this will

determine the torque and angulations for each case. This is Occlusion Medicine.
